"As long as Spike is still in my body, I cannot get well."

We hear this statement again and again, and we see how much fear it can create.

A recent study published in 2026 provides important new data on this topic.

What did the researchers investigate?

The researchers followed 425 people over a period of two years:

  • 167 people with Long COVID

  • 148 people who had fully recovered from COVID-19

  • 110 uninfected controls

They measured several SARS-CoV-2 components in the blood, including Spike, S1 (a part of the Spike protein), and nucleocapsid.

 

The surprising finding: 6–12 months after infection, viral antigens were still detectable in 31% of people with Long COVID. But they were also detectable in 20% of people who had fully recovered.

This is important: Detecting a viral component does not automatically mean that it is causing the symptoms.


After 18–24 months, antigens were detectable in the plasma of only 3.5% of the Long COVID group, even though these individuals still had Long COVID.

Even more importantly:


The researchers found no association between antigen detection and the number or type of symptoms.


These findings therefore challenge the simplified idea:

“As long as I still have Spike in my body, I cannot recover.”

That conclusion cannot be drawn from these data.


The study authors go even further:

In their view, SARS-CoV-2 antigens should currently not be used as a basis for assessing the course of Long COVID or for guiding treatment decisions.

That is a remarkably clear statement.


Why this matters to us

With Long COVID, individual laboratory findings can cause a great deal of fear.

People experiencing symptoms after COVID-19 vaccination often have similar questions. However, this patient group was not specifically investigated in the study presented here.


Detection does not equal causation.

And particularly in Long COVID, a growing body of research suggests that we should not focus solely on finding one single trigger. Instead, we need to understand how the immune system, nervous system, metabolism, vascular system, and the body’s regulatory processes interact.


Perhaps that is the most important message we can take from this study:

We can take biological changes seriously without turning every finding into a new threat.
