Understanding Chronic Fatigue
Chronic fatigue is more than normal tiredness.
Many sufferers experience deep physical and mental exhaustion, which is hardly improved by rest and can severely restrict everyday life.
Such symptoms can have various causes.
Diseases such as ME/CFS, Long Covid or MCAS often affect several body systems – for example, the nervous system, the immune system or the energy metabolism of the cells.
On this page you will find an overview of important connections and explanations regarding these diseases.

What is ME/CFS?
ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is a complex chronic illness that often begins after infections.
Those affected suffer from pronounced physical and mental exhaustion, which can be significantly worsened by stress.
This typical characteristic is called post-exertional malaise (PEM).
What is Long Covid?
Long Covid refers to persistent or newly occurring symptoms that last for weeks or months after a COVID-19 infection.
Long Covid is generally defined as symptoms that persist for more than four weeks after infection; if symptoms last longer than approximately twelve weeks, the term Post-Covid Syndrome is often used. In some cases, this can develop into a clinical picture that meets the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS.
Those affected often report severe exhaustion, concentration problems, breathing difficulties or circulatory problems.
The symptoms can affect various body systems and significantly restrict daily life.
What is MCAS?
MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) describes a disorder in which mast cells of the immune system are excessively activated and release increased amounts of messenger substances.
These substances can trigger various symptoms, such as skin reactions, gastrointestinal problems, circulatory problems, headaches, or severe exhaustion.
The symptoms can affect various organ systems and often occur in episodes.
